Child marriage remains a grave concern in India. It refers to the marriage of a girl or boy below the age of 18 years. Although illegal, it continues to be prevalent in many parts of the country, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged communities. Child marriage deprives young girls of their childhood and subjects them to numerous social, psychological, and health consequences. They are often forced into adult responsibilities, such as household chores and childbearing, before they are physically and emotionally ready. This cycle of early marriage perpetuates gender inequality and hinders progress towards social development. Furthermore, child marriage exposes girls to a heightened risk of domestic violence, marital rape, and other forms of abuse. They are often trapped in abusive relationships with limited options for escape or support. This not only violates their fundamental rights but also perpetuates a cycle of violence and oppression. To address these issues, empowerment and education play a crucial role. By empowering women and girls, we are helping break the cycle of discrimination and abuse. Empowerment involves providing women with the knowledge, skills, resources, and opportunities to make informed decisions and participate fully in social, economic, and political life. Education is a vital tool for empowerment. It equips girls with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Education empowers them to become independent, think critically, and challenge societal norms that perpetuate gender inequality. It also increases their awareness of their rights, enabling them to advocate for themselves and others. To promote women’s empowerment and education in India, several initiatives have been undertaken. Government programs, such as Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child), aim to improve the status of girls through access to education, healthcare, and protection from discrimination. Bihar Nari Shishu Seva Sangh also play a vital role in creating awareness, providing support services, and advocating for policy reforms. Moreover, addressing the root causes of child marriage requires a multi-faceted approach. It involves raising awareness about the harmful consequences of child marriage, engaging with communities to change cultural norms, strengthening legal frameworks, and ensuring access to education and economic opportunities for girls. Efforts should also focus on addressing the gender stereotypes and biases that perpetuate inequality. Challenging traditional gender roles and promoting gender equality within families, schools, and communities are essential steps towards creating a more equitable society.
